How does a popunder bypass ad blockers?

Most ad blockers intercept window.open() calls. Popunders use a hidden form submission targeting a named blank window, then redirect it after blur()/focus(). Because the initial open is a form-submit (not a script call) to about:blank, blockers typically do not flag it.

Is a popunder better than a popup?

Popunders are considered less intrusive because the user never sees them interrupt their session. They also have significantly higher fill rates since most ad blockers do not stop them. The trade-off is that the user may never notice the ad — but viewability is still counted.

What it is

Instead of calling window.open() with the ad URL directly (which blockers intercept), the script opens about:blank via a hidden form submission, immediately pushes the new tab behind the current one using blur()/focus(), and then navigates it to the advertiser’s URL. The user’s browsing is completely uninterrupted — they have full control and simply never saw an overlay. Viewability is effectively 100% because the page is fully loaded in background and counted as a view from the moment it renders.
